One Last Quiz

The other day, after they opened my road to traffic once again and I was cleaning up all the fallen branches from my front lawn left behind by Hurricane Irene, a thought came to me. I wondered, first of all, how did all this traffic find its way back to my street? And so quickly? Were they all waiting down outside the barricades, like racehorses at the starting gate chomping at the bit for the gun to go? And then I wondered, how many people driving by were driving along this route for the very first time and wasn’t even aware that it had been closed? And then I wondered how many people might have been thinking that very same thing…and for bonus points, at the same time. And then I wondered how many people might be outside at that very moment cleaning up their lawns. How many people in the world might yawn at the same time?  You know how infectious yawning is; the power of suggestion alone could get a room full of people following suit. How long this chore was going to take!  Turns out it took less than an hour and things accelerated once Ariel got in. I also thought about how many people also wonder where the wrinkles go when they fall out of your clothes?

So, yes, it’s September 1…already. Good gosh, where did the summer go? It’s also the birthday of Gloria Estefan, Barry Gibb and Rocky Marciano. It’s also the anniversary of the deaths of such luminaries as Ethel Waters and Helen Haye, not to be confused with Helen Hayes. Helen Haye was in such films as “The 39 Steps” and “Anna Karenina”, not the Greta Garbo original but the 1948 Vivien Leigh remake.  And in 1995 on this date, New York City reinstated the death penalty and in Cleveland, Ohio, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened. And it was the 4th ,10th , 15th , 32nd airings of The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. And this year, the telethon took a lot of twists and turns, the biggest of which being, as the latest info tells me, Jerry Lewis is OUT as host of the 6 hour event, (reduced from the usual 21).

Okay, let’s see how well you do on this quiz: Take a look at this picture and see if you can tell what plans we have for this holiday weekend.

Happy Labor Day, y’all!
